Black Toenails ~ Sore Toes

I am suffering from sore toes and received a nice set of black toenails (only 2 toes) during my 1/2 marathon. With only 8 miles as my long run in preparation for the October 21st Columbus Marathon, my toes are already starting to hurt.

I did some reaseach on it and came up with this for personal reference.

Jeff Galloway’s Injury Archives: Black Toenails

About: Black Toenail from Running or Walking

Some tips:

  • Go to a runnig shoe store and have a professional fit you with a pair of shoes
  • Buy shoes 1/2 or 1 size bigger than your street shoes
  • Clip your toe nails before running
  • Lace your shoes properly to keep the heel in the heelbox
  • Don’t increase your milage too drastically, your toes need to learn to take the pounding

It appears that a lot of people suffer from black toenails when running. Some of them minimize the discomfort with getting bigger shoes, etc, but in general, if you run (specially long runs) there is a high chance you end up with black toenails. Oh the fun!

Edit: May 28th, 2011

I still get sore toes when I run, but the toenails no longer turn purple and fall off…perhaps my toes have toughen up over the years of running. 🙂

5 miles @ work (11:55)

Time: 9:30 am

Weather: low to mid 70’s, nice, sunny

Clothes: Adidas shorts, MiT technical shirt

Shoes: Izumi Pearl

Distance: 5 miles

Time: 59:37

Split: 11:55

Course: COSI circle times 5

Comments: For some reason I thought I only had to run 3 miles today until I looked at the schedule at work. My original plan was to just run the 3 miles on the treadmill, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to do 5, so I decided to try it outside.

Overall good run, walked every mile and drank Gatorade. Didn’t want to overdo it and not be able to finish it, so I took my time. I had some sidepains, but none that would stop me from running. My left foot “index” toe is hurting. It started Monday after the run. The nailbed hasn’t completely recovered from the 1/2 marathon, but was no longer hurting until Monday. I’ll have to keep an eye on that.

The Garmin was only off by .07 today! Wo-hoo!

4 miles @ work (11:22)

Time: 7:30 am

Weather: 70’s, very humid, sunny

Clothes: Adidas shorts, MiT technical shirt

Shoes: Izumi Pearl

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 45:31

Split: 11:22

Course: COSI circle times 4

Comments: Not a bad run, but it was humid out, so I got it in early. The Garmin messed up again…I know the distance is one mile around, and the Garmin should have read around 4 miles, but it ended up at 3.61.

7.5 “8” Group Run (11:50) “11:06”

Time: 7:00 am

Weather: high 60’s, sunny (not bad)

Clothes: Adidas shorts, Adidas technical shirt, Fuel Belt

Shoes: Izumi Pearl

Distance: 7.5 miles or 8 miles

Time: 1:28:50

Split: 11:50 or 11:06

Course: Up and down Olentangy Trail

Comments: Overall not a bad run. Side pains only popped up when my breathing was off. I GUed at 3 and 6.5.

It seems to me the measurement of the ‘course’ is wrong. I was suppose to run 8 miles today, but the training program’s mileage only added up to 7.5! So, I “only” got to run 7.5, but what seemed strange is that I lost .4 miles on the way out, but none on the way back. We run 3 miles north, then turn around, run past the starting point for another mile and then head back.  I lost .4 on the first 3 mile leg, but none on the way back. I was off last week as well, but I thought that was because I got a late start and headed straight out after the potty visit and didn’t make it back to the starting point.

I’ll ask my sister in law to see what she says about her mileage on her Garmin. Next week’s long run is only 6 miles, I’ll be doing that at home.

We got a nice (Nike) running shirt today. It says MiT – Marathoners in Training in the front and Fleet Feet Columbus in the back. They had two colors to choose from, white or blue. I choose the blue one. Knowing that I would get my shirt after I completed my run helped me keep going! lol

Edit: The sis in law said it was 8 miles, that the trees sometimes interfere with the Garmin.

4 miles @ home (11:58)

Time: 7:00 am

Weather: high 60’s, sunny (not too bad)

Clothes: Adidas shorts, Adidas technical shirt, Fuel Belt

Shoes: Izumi Pearl

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 47:54

Split: 11:59

Course: Over 256 and back

Comments: I could tell that my body is tired. The run overall was not bad (some side pains), but I could not get my feet to go any faster. It felt like I had concrete blocks tied to my shoes! And to top it off the county ‘chipped’ our road (they don’t pave them, they just put tar down and then small, chipped rocks). The tar is bubbling through so the county just adds the rocks…fun to run on! Not. I am looking forward to going quadding the next two days with the family.

Comments30 forward 10 mintues backwards. Wanted to do 50 minutes, but started to get the shakes so I got off. I was suppose to run 3 miles today, but I am burned out (mainly just tired) and didn’t want to run at work nor late tonight. I did some side crunches after the eliptical rider.

3 @ work (11:14) & 2 miles eliptical

Time: 9:30 am

Weather: 70’s, hot

Clothes: Adidas shorts, Adidas technical shirt, Fuel belt

Shoes: Izumi Pearl

Distance: 3 miles  & 2.25 eliptical

Time: 33:51  & 20 min

Split: 11:16

Course: Scioto River Trail & past Cosi

Comments: Was suppose to run 5 miles! Mentally a very crappy run. I had side pains (I think I went at it too fast), but got them under control. Time wise not a bad run, but at mile three it hit me that I can’t do this today, even though I had my fuel belt and GU. Mentally I was just not with it. So I headed back to work and got on the eliptical rider for 2 miles (2.25 miles ~ 20 min ~ 256 cal).

It’s about 2 hours later and my legs are very sore. Might have to skip the 3 tomorrow and give my body a rest. 😦 Maybe I’ll do some upper body weight lifting instead.

I consider this a crappy run in order to appreciate runs like yesterday! 🙂

3 miles @work (10:59)

Time: 10:00 am

Weather: 70, sunny (not too bad)

Clothes: Adidas shorts, Adidas technical shirt

Shoes: Izumi Pearl

Distance: 3 miles

Time: 32:58

Split: 10:59

Course: Up and down Olentangy Trail

Comments: Negtive split time! (11:12, 11:02, 10:45) Excellent run. Felt Strong. Forgot my headphones, so no music. That helped me concentrate on the breathing though. Got some side stiches, but I am going to blame that on the little bit of Diet Pepsi I had before the run. The boss gave me the ok to run earlier than lunchtime…he said “Flex time, get your 8 (hours of work) in and I am fine with it”. Good thing he’s a runner and understands! Hopped on the eliptical rider for a mile, going backwards!
