Comments: The word “knee” and “pain” in the same sentence is a runner’s worst nightmare. At least IMHO. Well *sigh* this morning I set out on my trek and my right knee was aching with every step! Before it has only hurt when going up and down the stairs, but today it was hurting while I was running.  😦 

I didn’t want to throw in the towel right away (even though I already saw me finishing the marathon drifting off into a black hole and I started to feel my eyes water up) and continued running. The pain finally subsided after a ½ mile and mentally I was grinning at myself thinking ‘ya licked it’. Then, at mile 2 it came back!  

Now I feel like: “Stupid is what stupid does” Yep, that’s me…of course I continued running and the pain went away at mile 2.50. While I am running the e-mail that our coach sent us came to mind “don’t be a hero, if you have some unusual aches and pains take an additional day off”…And here I was running an additional 3 miles just to prove that my knee was ok. God, I need to be struck by lightening! 

2 hours later I sit at my desk; my knee is not hurting, but occasionally it aches a little bit though. Tomorrow is a 13 miler, for which I plan to run to the in-laws’ house and have them drive me back home. However, this time I’ll take my coaches words into consideration; if the knee is hurting I’ll return back to the house and try again on Sunday. Tom from Runner’s Lounge mentioned strengthening exercises; it made his ‘knee on the stairs pain’ go away. That makes sense and I’ll have to give it a shot!

Distance: 5.69 (I think my Garmin is off)

Time: 1:01:24

Split: 10:48 (I did not feel THAT fast)

Course: To Goodale Park, 1 ½ loops, then up & down Neil Ave.

    Make sure to take Advil–I know the arguments against, but a little Advil goes a long way for my knee.

    I hope this twinge is just a fluke. Hang in there. I second Crank on the Advil. Keeping any swelling down allows your body to better heal the tissues. Also, good that you have a plan for tomorrow so you won’t be tempted to run through it.

    I’ll be thinking about you doing 13 !!

    We all overdo it sometimes. Just make sure you don’t injure yourself further and take it easy if you need to. Your in this for the long haul. Have a great run!

    I am having one of those issues in my hip – never had it before but it kept me from running today. I have run through aches and pains before and end up paying the price. The issue is never with what I thought I was going to hurt, but the part of my body that had to compensate for the other injury. Running is like that…
