3.61 elliptical & strength training

Comment: Is it just me or is my “tire” getting smaller? They (the love handles) don’t seem to be quite as bad. I hope it’s not an opptical illusion.

Duration: 30:00 min

Miles: 3.61

Comment: I have to tell myself that I don’t need to get stronger, but rather just be able to do them efficiently. I get frustrated because it seems like I am making no progress.

Right shoulder got sore during bench press. Same ache I had after 1/2 marathon. Couple hours later no pain.

Shoulder Pull Downs: #6 x 20, #6 x 20

Triceps Pull Down: #5 x 20, #5 x 20

Rows: 50lbs x 20, 50lbs x 20

Bicep Curl: 10lbs x 20, 10lbs x 20

Bench Press: 45 lbs x 30 (bar only)

Comments: My legs, my whole body as a matter of fact were still tired from the run. I kept telling myself this is a recovery run, no need to set a snail’s land speed record. Parts of me enjoyed the run another part remembered why I quit running after long races.

But…I am still at it. However, I am not sure if I really want to try the marathon again. I am not sure if I want to put my body through it. I am going to continue to train for it, but I hate to run for 2 to 3 hours on a Saturday and then be recovering for the whole weekend. That doesn’t seem fair to the family. So…we’ll see how it goes.

I hurt my back in the afternoon, not bad, but it’s just a slight knot. I won’t do push ups tonight, so I won’t irretate it. Tomorrow is strength training. I am hoping it’ll be better.

Dash for Donations 1/2 Marathon (Course PR)

Comments: One of the things I forgot about this 1/2marathon was that we ran 2 loops of the course and one section of that loop is an out an back (and hilly). Yuck! Hopefully I will have forgotten that by next year!

The run overall was good. I tried starting out slow, but mile 3 I ran in 10:58, which is a bit fast, after that my miles where all around 11:30, except the last mile, that was a 12:18.

GUed every 4 miles, I will see if I can switch that to every 5 miles. That sweet stuff makes me wanna puke.

Lots of MiTers, that was very inspiring, and I guess the ‘out and back’ part of the loop was helpful, since we were able to cheer each other on twice.

Last year I died around mile 9 and I did a lot of walking. It wasn’t intentional walking, but rather the kind where you just find yourself walking without realizing it. This year was much better.

My post race recovery is much better as well. My body is not nearly as sore as it was last year, I am not lounging on the couch, instead I am doing mom/housewife stuff.

Course PR! Ran it 20 sec/mile faster than last year, over 7 minutes total (but it wasn’t as sunny this year)

Comments: I wish the weather was like this all year long!

I had stomach issues when I headed out and resigned myself to do whatever I can do to get the mileage in. Ends up I had one of my best 4 mile runs. 🙂 Hills tomorrow and the Dash for Donations 1/2 marathon on Saturday. Hopefully the weather will be as nice then as it was today.

4 @ work (11:13) HOT

Comments: The leg/ankle was good, I was worried. But it held in there and appears to be not quite as stiff. The weather was hot. I had my water bottle with me, but it was bone dry by the time I got back to work.

I ran the first two miles straight, but needed several walks afterwards to cool back down. Not a bad run considereing the heat and the long run on Saturday.

Time: 10:00am

Weather: 82 feels like 86, sunny and hot!

Clothes: MiT Shirt, NB shorts,

Shoes: Saucony ProGrid (214.1 miles)

11 @ home (11:31)

Comments: Got up at 5am to get out the door by 6. I am overall satisfied with the run and time. I started off slow on purpose and that took some effort not going out hard. But I think it paid off in the end, because I was not dead or walked when I should be running.

Around mile 6 my book on CD (iPod) had some issues, but thank goodness I had brought my Sansa mp3 player with me, switched over to that, and listened to fast paced music. (That was my goal all along, but not until mile 8 lol)

At mile 8 my left leg was getting really tight and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to finish, but told myself to work through it, and it ended up getting better around mile 9. Afterwards though, during my cool off walk, my left calf muscle, and the muscle above the ankle (outside) were hurting pretty good. I think my leg is still sore from ‘rolling’ off the berm on Thursday evening.

I am glad I got out of bed that early to run, because later on in the day the outside temperature gauge in our car read 94! Yikes!

5 @ home (11:29)

Comments: Ran at the In-Laws house. Pretty flat, but not much shade. After about a mile there is a bike path on either side of the road. One time a car slightly got onto the bike path and I moved further towards the side, stepped off berm, and twisted my ankle. 😦 I was able to continue running, but it sore now the next day.

Other than that I had a really good run considering the heat. I played the mental “run to this next, than run to that” games, which helped quite a bit, specially between mile 3 and 4.

Once again I slept like crap and I think I am overdoing it, so I am reluctantly taking today off to be fresh when I run 11 on Saturday. I am not particiapting in the 10 mile race. With it starting at 9am and with temperatures forecasted around 90 degrees, I’ll just run at home in the early AM.
