2012 RunCbus 10 Miler

My hopes for the race was to run a faster per-mile-pace than the 1/2 in Athens:

I had been warned about the hills during the second half of the race. I was ready for that. BUT, during my training I have been taking in water every 2 miles if I went longer than 6. The 10 miler only had 3 waterstops, plus one impromptu one at mile 9-something.

Other than the water stops – let me regress here again: the first one at mile 3.14, second one at mile 5, last one at mile 6.89, plus the impromptu one (where they handed out bottles of water) – I am not complaining. The course was challanging with a visible steady incline from mile 8.5 to 9.5. I checked my Garmin and the elevation changed 130 ft in that mile. The Gamin actually showed an incline from 7.5 to 9.5 but I didn’t really notice it until 8.5. I managed to hold on to an 11 min/mile pace from mile 8 to 9 and then ran a sub 10 the last mile.

The great thing about the race was that my daughter and her boyfriend watched me run. It was nice having them there; it was a special treat. 🙂 The other great thing was the nice New Balance jacket I received for signing up. 🙂 (No medal at the finish line though; can’t have it all)

To make a long story short: My overall mile pace during the Athens’ half was 10:26; it was 10:23 for the 10 miler. Mission accomplished!

Three more weeks until the Capital City Half Marathon!

Solid 10

Comments: For once I had a good feeling 10 miler. Even though I was already starting to feel soreness muscles from riding our quads the day before, I felt strong through the whole run.
Got Dirt?

Got Dirt?

I tried GUing at mile 5, but I was out of my regular GU (*mental note: never let that happen again!), and brought some other brand AND flavor thinking that it shouldn’t be too bad. Yeah right. NOT! Most of my GU ended up on the side of the road.

Frustrating 10

Comments: For some reason I can’t seem to have decent ten mile runs. 😦 The side stiches started at mile 1, even though I was running normal pace. Frustrating!

I wanted to see if I could run 4 miles, drink, Gu, run another 4 miles and drink and Gu again, but my body (or perhaps my mind) wanted nothing to do with that. I ran the first 4 miles with almost no problem, but felt the need to drink (and walk) at mile 6. That helped and I made it to mile 8. By then my legs felt really heavy and had to walk at mile 9.5 for just a short distance to get myself back into order.

Even though this was one of my fastest 10 milers, I feel like I failed. Live and learn, I guess. Next time I plan on running 2.5 miles, drink, run 2.5 miles, gue/drink, rinse and repeat. I am not sure if I’ll go another 13 miles or try to bump it up to 15. We’ll see how I feel by then.

Comments: Good run. My nutritional intake over the last week was really crappy and add to that it’s THAT time of the month is was an OK run. I will work on my food intake this week.

I only had one bout of side pains, but it faded quickly.

Comments:This was not a good run. I guess you have to have those to appreciate the good ones. I felt like I was running fast (effort wise) the first 3 miles. But the Garmin informed me that even though I felt like a Cheetah, I was only moving at a snails pace. Mile 4 is downhill and in turn I picked up the pace. GUed at mile 4 (being that I was only running 10 I wanted to make sure I GUed twice; mile 4 and 8)

At mile 3 though 6 my feel hurt. Both of them! It felt like I was running without shoes. Usually it’s just the left one, but not this time. Around mile 6 the pain started to go away (strange), and mile 7 and 8 were really good ones. I felt strong, no pain. I GUed at mile 8.

Shortly after GUing I got terrible side pains. I had some earlier in the run, but these caused me to walk. Very dissapointing. Around mile 9.5 they went away and I was able to run the last 1/2 mile without problems.

During my run I learned, from a nice orange road sign, that a 1 mile stretch (mile 6) of my loop is being closed for 7 weeks! Yikes. I’ll have to figure out where to run while they are working on it. I should use this as an incentive to run with the group on Saturdays.

Well, I am hoping that I have more luck with this Saturday’s 15 miler. I remember from last year, that that one kicked my butt!

Comments: I lost one of my GU’s before mile 4. Planned on “GUing” at mile 4 and 8, but instead GUed once at mile 5.5. So in that respect the run was not a pleasant as I had hoped. Had side stiches the first few miles and my left foot (under the middle toe) hurt from mile 4 to about mile 6. But overall a good run. After mile 7 I drank every mile.

Comments: This was a much better run than last weeks 6 miler. I did watch what I ate before-hand and eliminated any heavy foods. The run overall was good, I did not feel exausted at mile 9 (I was worried about that), rather just tired. Saw the hubby and kids around mile 8 coming back from town, he honked and made them wave! That was a lift in itself.

The book I was listening too was very interesting and did a good job of keeping my mind of the running. I did delevop a blister on my right foot in the arch, which became noticable around mile 5. About the same time my left foot/middle toe started to hurt. But neither ever got to the point where I could not continue. Guess I am just getting tougher! haha

Overall the run was not as fast as I had hoped, but I was not totally spent at the end and felt like I could have continued, that’s just what I wanted.
