It could have been worse!

Diagnosis: Yep, I think I got off fairly light. The MRI revealed that I do not have a stress fracture (modified happy dance), but instead a grade II strain (partial tear) in the flexor hallucis longus tendon. It is the tendon that moves the big toe. As previously mentioned, I also have achilles tendonitis. The MRI also showed a small cyst (5mm), which could have formed at the time of the injury.

Game plan: No running for the next two weeks, but cross training is allowed. Physical therapy for the next two weeks, twice a week. Then back to the doctor and continued physical therapy for another three weeks, once a week. She hopes to have me start easing back into running in about two to three weeks.

I have already received some stretching exercises from the physical therapist…how convenient they are right next to the sports doctor…and started working on getting better. I am glad that besides the treadmill we also own a stationary bike. Over the last week I have increased my seat time quite a bit, managing about one hour (approx 18 miles) per day, and two hours on Sunday. It helps. I’d prefer an elliptical rider over the bike and have placed that on my wish list. lol

The good news is that I have been diligently tracking my food intake since not running and actually have lost some weight (not muscle though; I track that info as well). I have five more pounds to go to get to my desired weight.

On another matter, I am getting ready to sign myself and my sister up for the Cleveland Marathon (half), which is being held May 20th. My sister, who resides in Germany is coming for a visit to watch her daughter (who lives in the US with her dad) graduate from high school. My sister is staying at our house for a little bit during her trip to the US, and being that we both enjoy running and track each other’s progress from afar, it will be great to actually run a race with her. I am super excited about this and I am sure will blabber more as the time draws closer! Sisters by chance, friends by choice.

3.9 miles @ work (11:37)

Comments: Even though some of the sidewalks were pretty slushy/frozen it was a good run overall.

Went to the doctor, who is a nerve/skeleton/muscular specialist. He could not see anything wrong with me (no pulled muscles) and his exact words were “Your pain lies deeper than muscles.” So he reffered me to a gastrologist. They will call me after they set up the appointment. I had a pretty bad afternoon yesterday, pain wise. I hope that I will stay moderatly pain free today.

Weather: high 20’s

Clothes: Long sleeve shirt, Pants, Gloves, BB Hat

Shoes: Saucony

Distance: 3.9

Time: 45:16

Split: 11:37

Course: Goodale park, loop x2 and back.

Dr. visit

The doctor is not sure why I am still hurting…he wants to give my body time to heal and re-evaluate me in 4 weeks.

I am better than I was 4 weeks ago, so perhaps it’s just taking time to heal. 🙂 I am looking forward to running tomorrow…gonna see if I can handle the cold weather and run 2 miles.

Hurry up and wait

Went to the doctor: after the examination (diagnosis: cyst) he scheduled me for an ultra-sound to be done Thursday because it’s all too tender on the left side for him to do his ‘touchy feely thing’ and he can’t tell exactly what’s going on. So, if I am still with cyst and in pain on Thursday, he’ll schedule me for a laparoscopy on Friday; out patient surgery.

However, after going through all the scheduling and such, he got the results of the CAT scan (which I had done elsewhere last week), which read that I had a fluid like, 3 mm big buildup on my RIGHT side. Hmmm, it’s my LEFT side that is in pain. Apparently it made perfect sense to him and in turn seemed less concerned. He is under the impression that my pains will go away in the next two days. Gosh I hope he’s right!

That’s it…end of report! To be continued Thursday afternoon. I am relieved that it is nothing urgent, but on the other hand I wish it was so I can do something about it, because I am in pain. Once again I have to sit and wait!

2008 – It can only get better

The reason for such a long break in posting is because I have been dwelling in my own misery for the last two weeks:

I am dealing with some ‘female issues’ after a CAT scan found something in my pelvis area. Initially the (urgent care) doctor thought I was passing a kidney stone, but going by the scan that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I never would thought I’d say that I am looking forward to an OB/GYN appointment, but let me tell you, I am now! The pain in my lower abdomen comes and goes and when it hits it is not pleasant. I am ready to tackle what ever it might be and move forward. The doctor’s appointment is tomorrow. woot!

So, needless to say I have not run since it started. Of course I had to get this during the holidays; businesses are closed, results are processed slower, and my OB takes a week off. *sigh* AND, to add to my misery I got a nice head cold going on right now.

Here is to hoping that 2008 only gets better and that my aches are only a minor thing! 🙂

I must be runner…

…because the Doc said I have “Runner’s Knee” lol What a relief, because the hypochondriac in me anticipated a much worse diagnosis! 😉

The doctor gave me some specific strengthening exercises to do to offset the muscle imbalance, told me to continue icing it, and take painkillers for the pain if necessary. He also said that this knee problem should not stop me from running  the marathon. Woot! 😀

He gave me the OK to cross train and also try to run, being that the pain is starting to subside. He said I might feel some slight pain, but as long as it doesn’t change my gait it’s ok. He also suggested buying a new pair of shoes being that mine have 300 miles on them.

So, my game plan is to just forget about the 20 miler this weekend. Instead I am going to do cross training/strengthen today and tomorrow, and then see how far my legs will take me on Saturday. Starting next week I’ll ease back into the mileage.

I am sooo ready to go out and run!!! My co-workers noticed that I am more crabby than usual! Of course they are all know I have been “cooped up”. 😉

I am looking forward to running in cooler weather…finally!

ART – Dr. Visit

The visit went well. The streching, icing, anti-inflammatory, and rest is working. Amazing how much better if feels when you know how to stretch the muscle that needs to be stretched, makes a world of difference.

The doctor applied pressure to each muscle in the surrounding and effected area. It was 20 minutes of going through a grinder, but I have had hardly any pain since then…AND I was allowed to run a mile today. If that goes well then I am to increase it a mile per day each day…wOOt!

The result is in

I have piriformis syndrome. I pulled the piriformis (a butt) muscle which argited my sciatic nerve (going down my leg). Physical therapy (PT) and some ART (Active Relase Technique) are in order. “My” doctor hopes to have me back running in about 2 weeks. My first ART appointment is the 16th, being that my first PT (initial evaluation) isn’t until the 23rd I’ll have the ART treatment first.

Because it hurts on the elliptical rider I’ll be peddeling my butt of so I don’t loose any of the muscles strength I have gained. He also showed me a specific stretch I should do and told me how many times to ice it per day.

I’ll be on the bike tonight after work before class! I figure I can do that for an hour and then do my stretching.

I am now on the road to recovery *meep!* *meep!*
