2008 – It can only get better

The reason for such a long break in posting is because I have been dwelling in my own misery for the last two weeks:

I am dealing with some ‘female issues’ after a CAT scan found something in my pelvis area. Initially the (urgent care) doctor thought I was passing a kidney stone, but going by the scan that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I never would thought I’d say that I am looking forward to an OB/GYN appointment, but let me tell you, I am now! The pain in my lower abdomen comes and goes and when it hits it is not pleasant. I am ready to tackle what ever it might be and move forward. The doctor’s appointment is tomorrow. woot!

So, needless to say I have not run since it started. Of course I had to get this during the holidays; businesses are closed, results are processed slower, and my OB takes a week off. *sigh* AND, to add to my misery I got a nice head cold going on right now.

Here is to hoping that 2008 only gets better and that my aches are only a minor thing! 🙂

2.3 at work (11:36)

Comments: Leg still hurts, but I had to get out and run. The right leg was tight, and then my right shin started to hurt. I have to assume because I was (unintentionally) striking the ground differently. So I walked a bit, stretched the shin muscle and finished up.

Shoes: Saucony

Distance: 2.3

Time: 26:39

Split: 11:36

5 miles @ home (10:47)

Comments: I had so much crap to do today, but I HAD to get my 5 miler in there. After all it was ONLY 5 miles. So with frustrations build up during the day I tried to run it all off and I sure did. I pushed myself the whole way. This has to be a PR for 5 miles at home! (Edit: I checked and it is a PR – woot!)

My right leg was tight in the beginning, my calve muscle hurt for a while and then it moved to the front of the leg, but it didn’t turn into any antagonizing pain, so I pushed through it. I am happy about this run because my 22 miler was so incredible slow.

Comments: I was hoping for 6 miles on the rider in 50 min, didn’t happen. But, I did go further in that timeframe than I have ever before…so, yay me! 😉 The leg is still not well, but it is not getting any worse.

5.38 @ work (11:32)

Comments: Rinse and repeat, same as Monday, except it was a hotter: Right leg was pretty stiff in the beginning, but after I warmed up it was bearable. The ball of my left foot under the middle toe still starts hurting raound mile 3. 😦

Found out today that my employer will reimburse me some of my marathon entry fee (Employee Activity Reimbursement). NICE! 🙂

5.37 @ work (11:25)

Comments: Right leg was pretty stiff in the beginning, but after I warmed up it was good. Now, afterwards I just have to remind myself to get up every ten minutes so it won’t get too stiff.

The ball of my left foot under the middle toe still starts hurting after about mile 3, but the toe box is big enough, and my toes are thankful! 🙂

12 @ home (12:17)

Comments: Walked .10 of a mile every mile. Right leg was tight and ached the whole way; no knee pain though!!! The ache did not get worse and I did not get shin splint pains. Overall not a bad run.

The following day my right leg was very sore right above the knee in the back. I am pretty sure it’s just a muscle ache! My piriformis muscle is also aching, but not bad. Continuing with the iceing and stretching when possible.

Depending how next week 22 miler is going, which I am looking forward to by the way, I’ll make the decision on running the full or the half. Coming home after runing the 12 I felt I could have gone out and do it again. I am very happy about that.

Time: 7:14 am

Weather: not sure, but nice, overcast

Distance: 12

3 @ work (10:57) & 3 miles elliptical

Comments: The 10am, 3 mile run was not pleasant. The knee was ok, but the piriformis muscle made a starteling, painful comeback! In order to compansate the new ache I changed my gait and in turn got shin splint pains in my right leg. The pain was not too bad over all though (or maybe my pain tresh hold is going up) and I was able to finish the run in a very decent time.

I did not want to irritate the leg further so I did 3 miles on the elliptical rider before class in the PM.

Thoughts of changing over to the 1/2 marathon have entered my mind.

I am making tomorrow a rest day.

Time: 10am/4pm

Weather: 80/indoor

Clothes: Adidas Technical Shirt, Adidas Shorts/ Peguin Shirt, Izumi Shorts

Distance: 3/3

Time: 32:53/30:00

Split: 10:57/N/A

Course: To 670 underpass and back.

I must be runner…

…because the Doc said I have “Runner’s Knee” lol What a relief, because the hypochondriac in me anticipated a much worse diagnosis! 😉

The doctor gave me some specific strengthening exercises to do to offset the muscle imbalance, told me to continue icing it, and take painkillers for the pain if necessary. He also said that this knee problem should not stop me from running  the marathon. Woot! 😀

He gave me the OK to cross train and also try to run, being that the pain is starting to subside. He said I might feel some slight pain, but as long as it doesn’t change my gait it’s ok. He also suggested buying a new pair of shoes being that mine have 300 miles on them.

So, my game plan is to just forget about the 20 miler this weekend. Instead I am going to do cross training/strengthen today and tomorrow, and then see how far my legs will take me on Saturday. Starting next week I’ll ease back into the mileage.

I am sooo ready to go out and run!!! My co-workers noticed that I am more crabby than usual! Of course they are all know I have been “cooped up”. 😉

I am looking forward to running in cooler weather…finally!

Longest mile ever…

Ever since yesterday’s run I was wondering “will my knee be better tomorrow?”, “will I be able to run the 13 or so miles to the in-laws’ house?” It was aching off and all day yesterday, pushing itself into my conscious thought process.

Today I found out and the answer is “NO!” 😦

The knee was feeling fine when I woke up and I was in good spirits. It was 7am when I headed out the door. I decided to walk the first ½ mile just to get my body warmed up (the muscles rather, because it was pretty darn warm outside already). No knee pains.

But once I started running it gradually started to ache. It took me a ½ mile of internal conversations/discussion/debate to ‘call it a day’. The runner in me wanted to see how far I could really go before the knee blew, but (luckily) my brain won the battle and I stopped & turned around.

I don’t think I have ever been so disappointed in a very long time. With tears of frustration streaming down my face I wobbled that long mile home. And as if the knee ache wasn’t enough, someone “upstairs” decided to open up the flood gates and by the time I got home I was soaking wet. When it rains it pours, right??? lol

After the shower I took a closer look at my knee and noticed that it is slightly swollen just above the knee cap, that’s where the pain is at. There and under the knee cap. (Runner’s knee?)

My game plan is to wait at least until Monday, possibly Wednesday before I run again. I plan on doing some strength training tomorrow if the knee lets me. If it still not better than off to the doctor I go.

To get my mind of things I decided to indulge myself by playing World of Warcraft, a massive multiplayer online role playing game, all afternoon. That’s something I have not done in a long time.

So, in front of my laptop I sit, one hand on the mouse guiding my little character around, beating on things and the other hand on my knee holding an icepack in place. Life is good!

I have not given up yet, after all, I still have plenty of time to get back on track…or so I hope.
