It could have been worse!

Diagnosis: Yep, I think I got off fairly light. The MRI revealed that I do not have a stress fracture (modified happy dance), but instead a grade II strain (partial tear) in the flexor hallucis longus tendon. It is the tendon that moves the big toe. As previously mentioned, I also have achilles tendonitis. The MRI also showed a small cyst (5mm), which could have formed at the time of the injury.

Game plan: No running for the next two weeks, but cross training is allowed. Physical therapy for the next two weeks, twice a week. Then back to the doctor and continued physical therapy for another three weeks, once a week. She hopes to have me start easing back into running in about two to three weeks.

I have already received some stretching exercises from the physical therapist…how convenient they are right next to the sports doctor…and started working on getting better. I am glad that besides the treadmill we also own a stationary bike. Over the last week I have increased my seat time quite a bit, managing about one hour (approx 18 miles) per day, and two hours on Sunday. It helps. I’d prefer an elliptical rider over the bike and have placed that on my wish list. lol

The good news is that I have been diligently tracking my food intake since not running and actually have lost some weight (not muscle though; I track that info as well). I have five more pounds to go to get to my desired weight.

On another matter, I am getting ready to sign myself and my sister up for the Cleveland Marathon (half), which is being held May 20th. My sister, who resides in Germany is coming for a visit to watch her daughter (who lives in the US with her dad) graduate from high school. My sister is staying at our house for a little bit during her trip to the US, and being that we both enjoy running and track each other’s progress from afar, it will be great to actually run a race with her. I am super excited about this and I am sure will blabber more as the time draws closer! Sisters by chance, friends by choice.

Comments: One daughter off to college, 2 more to go! After spending all day at the university that my oldest step daughter is attending I really didn’t feel like running, so I got on the stationary bike instead and then pushed some weights around.

Bike @ home 6 miles

Comments: I had nothing to do now that I gave up playing on the computer during the week*, and with a new book to listen to I headed downstairs to ride the stationary bike. My game plan was to ride it for an hour, but then thought better of it. I don’t want to wear out my legs completely.

*This is one of the results from the very serious conversation I had with myself during the 1/2 marathon. I have gotten more sleep and feel so much happier about things. (I still check up on my favorite blogs via my Palm Pilot though 😉 )


On Saturday I am looking forward to participating in the virtual 10k on the 10th race. Thanks Nancy for getting that going!

Comments: There was just not enough time in the day to go out and run yesterday. I beat my body again working on the house addition (the walls are up – woot!) and let me tell you: working in that heat all day makes me appreciate the easy office life I usually have during the week. My hat goes off to all those people that work outside all day!!!

So…I rode my stationary bike while watching CSI after CSI on the Spike Channel! At one point in time the hubby walked in with a pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream! Ahhh!!! I told him he was cruel. 😉 First he offered me some and then he offered to leave the room. But I told him that is was OK and he ended up watching TV with me. That was nice.

My knees are complaining just sitting here. With that and the fact I really need to study for my Family Law class exam I might skip my 5 mile run. If I run or hop on the elliptical rider my brain will turn into mush and I won’t be able to retain needed information! 😦 And to be quite honest I just don’t feel like running today.

Comments: The massage this afternoon was wonderful…best money spend. The kink in my neck is much better. Wonderful experience. Stationary bike…needed to make up for the mile lost this morning..245 calories. Also did Core Training.

CommentsRight side (hip/muscles) started to hurt after 18 min. Now, over an hour later I have dull pains going up and down the right side of my leg. Can’t wait to find out what is causing the pain, heal up, and get back at it. Not running is driving me (and in turn my family) nuts!
